Ubiquitous computing within cars: designing controls for non-visual use
نویسندگان
چکیده
Increasingly, computing and communications-based technologies are being implemented within cars. There is a need for fundamental research and development to ensure that the control interfaces for future cars require minimal visual demands. The needs, abilities and preferences of drivers (in particular older drivers) are clearly a prime focus, as part of a user-centred design approach. In addition, it is argued that much can be learnt from the experience and strategies adopted by people who are blind or have low vision (a non-user group). The paper sets out a number of research questions regarding the inclusion of such people in the design process of future automobiles. ( 2001 Academic Press

Issues in Personalizing Shared Ubiquitous Devices
As ubiquitous computing becomes widespread, we are increasingly coming into contact with “shared” computer-enhanced devices, such as cars, televisions, and photocopiers. Our interest is in identifying general issues in personalizing such shared everyday devices. Our approach is to compare alternative personalization methods by deploying and using alternative personalization interfaces (portable...
متن کاملChange Blind Information Display for Ubiquitous Computing Environments
Occupants of future computing environments with ubiquitous display devices may feel inundated with changing digital information. One solution is to create a reasoning module that accepts requests to display information from multiple applications and controls how the information is presented to minimize visual disruptions to users. Such a system might use information about what activity is occur...
متن کاملAbnormalitites of Visual Evoked Potential in Migraine Patients
Background: Visual evoked potential (VEP) is regarded as a useful, reliable and non-invasive technique for the diagnosis of lesions in the optic pathway. This technique was used to investigate visual function in migraine. Materials and Methods: 53 migraine patients (27 migraine cases with aura and 26 common migraine cases) and 55 controls were prospectively enrolled in this study. Visual ev...
متن کاملDesigning and Evaluating In-Car User-Interfaces
The introduction of computing and communications technologies within cars raises a range of novel human-computer interaction (HCI) issues. In particular, it is critical to understand how user-interfaces within cars can best be designed to account for the severe physical, perceptual and cognitive constraints placed on users by the driving context. This chapter introduces the driving situation an...
متن کاملCARM: Composable, Adaptive Resource Management System in Ubiquitous Computing Environments
Presently heterogeneous devices provided with several communications interfaces are everywhere, with this, we are increasingly coming in contact with ”shared” computer-enhanced devices such as cars, portable media players, or home appliances, commonly called ubiquitous computing environments. These environments require special properties that traditional computing does not support, such as a pr...
